Throughout his career, Dr. Johnson has published 52 articles in prestigious journals, including The American Journal on Addictions, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, and the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
His work has been widely recognized, and he has received royalties from Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing as one of their most downloaded authors.
Dr. Johnson’s expertise extends beyond academia. He has been deeply involved with both the drug culture and the recovery community, even being considered for the board of directors of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). In 2015, he spoke at the international AA convention, where he presented on the neurobiological underpinnings of AA aphorisms.
Despite his significant contributions, Dr. Johnson’s career has not been without controversy. Known for his principled leadership and unyielding advocacy for patients, he has faced challenges in the academic world, often clashing with those who resist his candid approach. Yet, he remains steadfast in his commitment to truth and patient care.
In addition to his academic and clinical achievements, Dr. Johnson was invited to the October 2023 Renaissance Weekend, an exclusive gathering of American thought leaders, including figures such as Hillary and Bill Clinton, Madeline Albright, and several Supreme Court Justices.
Dr. Johnson continues to influence the field of addiction psychiatry as Professor Emeritus at SUNY Upstate, where his innovative research and dedication to patient care leave a lasting impact. Dr. Johnson now leads Addiction Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate - Founded and then led Addiction Psychiatry for 13 years.
